The short answer
Choose Zapier if you want the fastest start and the most app connections, and you don't mind paying more as you grow.
Choose Make if you like visual building and need branching flows at a lower cost per step.
Choose n8n if you want maximum control, complex logic or AI steps, or the option to self-host.

Zapier: the easiest place to start
Zapier is built for non-technical users. You pick a trigger app, pick an action app, and follow the guided steps. It has the largest library of app connections, so the tool you need is almost always there.
Watch out for: Zapier counts every action step as a task. A workflow with five steps that runs 100 times uses 500 tasks, so busy automations can get expensive.
Make: visual and flexible
Make shows your automation as a map of connected circles. You can split paths, filter data and loop through lists without code. Many users find it more affordable than Zapier for multi-step flows.
Watch out for: the visual editor has more options, so expect a longer learning curve than Zapier.
n8n: the most control
n8n is open source. You can use n8n Cloud or install the free Community Edition on your own server. Its cloud plans count a full workflow run as one execution, no matter how many steps it has, which can make long workflows much cheaper.
Watch out for: self-hosting means you handle the server, updates and backups. If you are not technical, start with n8n Cloud.

The bottom line
All three are good tools. The best choice depends on your skills and on how many steps your workflows have. Start on a free plan or trial, build the same simple workflow in two of them, and keep the one that feels natural.
